The newly developed sun | systemizer is the large-scale energy storage system designed for peak compensation, grid stability, intelligent, decentralised grid storage solutions and energy marketing. The HOPPECKE high-performance energy storage system is the world's first VRLA/lithium hybrid system of its kind.
• First large-scale energy storage system with hybrid technology
• Innovative, mobile concept
• First system is currently under construction at the Brilon-Hoppecke site
HOPPECKE is currently building a large-scale storage system that combines the advantages of lithium ions and lead-acid batteries and is integrated with an intelligent power manager. The sun | systemizer is designed as a modular container system for optimum utilisation of the available space. In addition to its hybrid design, this newly developed HOPPECKE system offers further innovations for the intermediate storage of large amounts of energy, an area of application that is becoming increasingly important.
The sun | systemizer is used initially as a large-scale storage system for the primary control reserve in the electricity grid. The utility frequency of the current in our power grid should always be 50 Hz. Major variations could damage electrical equipment or - at worst - result in a complete power failure or blackout. In practice, however, there are regular frequency and voltage fluctuations in the grid, which are also balanced out with large energy storage systems.
Currently we obtain about a third of our electricity from renewable resources such as sunlight and wind. This proportion is increasing steadily. The injection of renewable energy into the grid is a volatile process and is literally dependent on wind and weather. Consequently the frequency is also subject to increasing fluctuations, which makes large-scale storage systems, such as the HOPPECKE sun | systemizer, increasingly important.
The new HOPPECKE sun | systemizer is also suitable for other grid-specific applications. For instance, it can be used as a large-scale storage system for numerous decentralised energy sources and consumers, as a backup for charging systems in e-mobility applications and for industrial power systems as well as off-grid solutions.
The outstanding innovation achieved with the new HOPPECKE sun | systemizer lies in the combination of VRLA batteries with ESS technology and lithium-ion batteries. Our reference project achieved approx. 1.1 MWh of useful energy content with lead-acid batteries and 500 kWh with lithium battiers. All this results in an optimal constellation of cost and space requirements as well as short-term and long-term energy output and input. The innovative rack system ensures perfect use of the available space in the container. The individual battery modules are also fully scalable and can be configured to suit all customer-specific requirements. And of course the sun | systemizer can be operated exclusively with lead-acid or lithium batteries if appropriate in any individual case.
The sun | systemizer is controlled by the intelligent HOPPECKE EMS (energy management system). All the relevant battery and component data, including variables such as room temperature, are recorded in real time and analysed on a networked basis. In automatic mode, the EMS can control and regulate power in the event of critical variations. The new type of fire protection concept used in the sun | systemizer provides particularly effective protection for the lithium-ion batteries. As a result, the grid-scale storage system meets state-of-the-art safety requirements and is already equipped for the future.
Connection to the grid and the start of its official power grid operation of the new HOPPECKE sun | systemizer large-scale storage systemare is planned for July.
