Challenges of heavy-duty applications with a view to electric forklift trucks and PzS motive power batteries - Wednesday, 14.07.2021

Transporting heavy cargo electrically, driving and lifting quickly - the electric drive is increasingly advancing into areas that were previously reserved for combustion engines. This is due to the indisputable advantages that the use of electric forklifts brings users compared to diesel forklifts:

▪ Higher overall efficiency and thus correspondingly lower energy costs
▪ Reduction of effort, time and money for maintenance, as electric forklifts are equipped with significantly fewer moving parts
▪ Low-vibration and low-noise operation ensures satisfied and healthy drivers
▪ No local exhaust gases and a significantly improved CO2 footprint protect people and the climate
▪ No storage of fuel and no filling station infrastructure necessary
▪ Safe use - also in indoor areas

Only the area of heavy-duty applications with loads of five tons or more is currently dominated by diesel trucks in most areas. However, the pressure on this market segment is growing because of regulatory measures taken by politicians against climate change to promote electrification here as well. The switch to electric forklifts is also subsidized by the government under certain circumstances.

What are the specific challenges posed by heavy-duty operation to electric forklifts and in particular to energy storage systems? Why do the classic PzS motive power batteries often have problems in these applications and what needs to be optimized in order to be electrically successful in the heavy-duty sector?

These questions are considered and answered in the following white paper.
