From now on, HOPPECKE Batteries will secure public transport in Amsterdam. Not only has the population increased to almost 840,000 in recent decades, but the Dutch metropolis is one of the world's most popular cities, especially because of the approximately 10 million overnight stays and an estimated 17 million tourists per year. Of course: Amsterdam has more bicycles than inhabitants, 58% of the daily traffic is by bike. More than 3 million people, most of them tourists, sail the canals every year with one of the canal boats. However, public transport is also very well developed and heavily used. 16 tram lines cross the city on a total length of 213 kilometers. In addition, there are 4 metro lines with a total length of 81.2 km.

 

The public transport system is operated by the Amsterdam GVB public transport company. As usual in such cases, the rail network has extensive safety and emergency power supply systems. These are batteries that provide emergency power for lighting and ventilation of tunnels, for monitoring switches and signals, for level crossings and for all necessary systems that must remain in operation in the event of a power failure. These batteries are therefore crucial for the safe operation of public transport in Amsterdam.

 

HOPPECKE supplies and installs batteries for Amsterdam public transport

 

Various types of batteries and technologies are used in Amsterdam's public transport system. With immediate effect, HOPPECKE supplies and installs the batteries for the railway infrastructure in Amsterdam. Various nickel-cadmium batteries will be used. In addition, many of the particularly low-maintenance AGM batteries are used. The batteries must be able to store and maintain energy over a very long period of time and then release it in the undesirable moment of a power failure. The batteries offered by HOPPECKE have a lifetime expectancy of about 15 to 20 years.

 

Occasional regional power outages in the Netherlands happen some times. The trams and metros do not continue to run on batteries in the event of a power failure. However, the emergency power allows doors to be opened further and the light in the trains continues to shine. Lighting is also maintained in tunnels, as well as other important functions. HOPPECKE's cooperation with the municipal transport authorities GVB will be contractually agreed to last at least two and up to seven years.
