Königssee is located in the Berchtesgadener Land, near the German-Austrian border. With its crystal clear water it is one of the cleanest lakes in Germany, embedded in impressive rock faces. Wastewater is not discharged into the lake, so that the Königssee has drinking water quality. Only electric boats operate there, as far as possible all year round. Ships powered by petroleum or steam were tested on the Königssee, but in the untouched nature they acted as foreign bodies. Electric boats have been sailing on Lake Königssee since 1909. The first of these electrically powered ships already reached a maximum speed of 10 km/h or 5.4 knots per hour and had a range of 100 kilometres. The engine output was 15 hp.
The crystal-green colour of Bavaria's deepest lake, with a depth of up to 192 metres, is created by the fact that lime particles dissolved in the water break the sunlight. Swimming in the Königssee is permitted, but the water temperatures are usually quite low. There are 18 large electric boats and one small electric boat, operated by the Bavarian Lake Navigation Service running almost noiselessly on the lake.
Two of the electric boats on the Königssee are powered by HOPPECKE batteries.
