Battery safety workshop at Rolls Royce - Monday, 16.12.2024

Going about battery maintenance the right way is crucial. It saves businesses time and money. Projected battery lifecycle can be achieved. Fleets enjoy optimal battery performance. This, in turn, boosts MHE performance. In the long run, logistics operations can meet productivity targets. Most importantly, however, correct battery maintenance prevents accidents. Quite simply, adhering to best practice keeps warehouse operatives safe.

Battery safety workshops

Safety is a priority. At all times. Of course, not all logistics businesses carry out maintenance themselves. Yet, warehouse operatives should appreciate that issues can arise. It’s why we organise battery safety workshops. Most recently, in partnership with Briggs Equipment, we hosted an event for Rolls Royce. Some 80 employees at the Derby aircraft engine factory attended. Rolls Royce supported the initiative at the highest level. As expected, warehouse personnel attended the training. Encouragingly, so did managers and health and safety professionals.

Best practice

Working with groups of 20-30 people at a time, our focus was best practice. Specifically, how proper handling, storage and use of batteries makes a difference. Getting it right significantly reduces potential hazards. It mitigates the risk of overheating, leakage and even explosions.

Correct charging

Deploying the correct chargers for your batteries is also key. As well as ensuring appropriate charging it avoids damage. So the training included guidance on charging procedures.

Topping

Topping was another key topic at the battery safety workshop. Although Rolls Royce warehouse operatives don’t do it, they need to understand what is involved. Therefore, we addressed types of battery filling systems and the use of topping equipment. The sessions emphasised the importance of wearing PPE. We also highlighted why adequate ventilation is crucial.

Identify and report defects

So, what happens when something is wrong? It’s vital to know if there’s a problem. The workshop therefore looked at how to inspect batteries and identify faults. Attendees learnt about cleaning, checking fluid levels and neutralising acid spills. Obviously, we emphasised the importance of reporting defects.

Access to learning

In addition to a presentation and Q&A session, the event incorporated a break out area. A display of battery parts, including cutaway cells, helped everyone to improve their understanding. Meanwhile, a training platform reinforces key messages. It’s not always convenient for customer employees to attend a battery safety workshop. So, the online training helps people to catch up. They simply log in and access the learning.

Safety

Ultimately, it’s in everyone’s interests for warehouse operatives to understand batteries better. We were delighted to help Rolls Royce promote battery safety. And, as always, it was a pleasure to work with Briggs Equipment to convey key messages.
