Algeco’s sustainable materials handling solution - Wednesday, 11.10.2023

Investment in the latest MHE ensures a sustainable solution for Algeco. A global business, its primary aim was to go green. After preferred supplier BJB Lift Trucks conducted a full analysis, Algeco made the switch to electric. Its new fleet is powered by Hoppecke batteries.

Temporary space solutions

Algeco is part of the Modulaire Group, Europe and Asia Pacific’s leading provider of modular temporary accommodation and turnkey solutions. The company has been addressing temporary space challenges for over 60 years.

Challenges

For Algeco, mitigating its environmental impact was a top priority. However, the non-standard fleet composition posed a further challenge. More than 100 IC engine forklifts were in operation across 30 sites. The business struggled with high running costs and downtime issues.

In-depth review

The end goal was a sustainable materials handling solution. So, the process commenced with an investigation into carbon neutrality. Next, BJB Lift Trucks reviewed the marketplace. Logisnext TCM, Kalmar Cartogec and Combilift won the contract to supply electric MHE.

Technology

Of course, how best to power the trucks was critical. BJB Lift Trucks considered lithium-ion and traditional lead acid batteries. The company also investigated hydrogen cell technology. Discussions followed with several potential energy partners. We took time to understand Algeco’s set up. This allowed us to target battery capacity and technology that will deliver trouble-free operation. Ultimately, our trak uplift air batteries and comprehensive service package represented the best offer.

Truck performance data

That said, accessible truck performance data was another key requirement. We therefore fitted all batteries with a monitor. The trak collect advance battery controller records draw, temperature and electrolyte level and reports via the cloud to a live online platform. All authorised personnel can view the information. When batteries require electrolyte topping, the module informs nominated contacts.

Sustainable materials handling solution

These days, the product is only part of the deal. Increasingly, customers turn to us for quality service support. It’s a key element of Algeco’s energy solution. Customised service support to meet specific needs minimises downtime. Our engineers take responsibility for all battery topping requirements.

Cost savings

We’re delighted to partner with BJB Lift Trucks to support Algeco. Our solution meets key operational objectives. It’s sustainable, promoting a lower carbon footprint. Importantly, it’s highly cost-effective. Algeco will benefit from significant energy and fuel cost reductions.
